In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Taking Place
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
