European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
