Devastating Update on UPS Accident: Fatalities Rises to 13

The number of lives lost resulting from the freight aircraft that burst into flames and went down has risen to 13, as confirmed by latest reports.

Official's Statement

Traveling to the Teamsters’ memorial service, I received word of a 13th person that died as a consequence of the UPS flight 2976 accident,” wrote the municipal leader in a social media post. “My heart is with the families, associates and peers of all who were taken in this recently occurred tragedy. We will get through this together.”

Victims Identified

A statement from the company named the flight crew aboard the aircraft as Pilot Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.

“Our hearts go out to each employee who has been impacted and everyone in our Louisville community – assisting you and making sure you obtain the attention and assistance you need is our priority,” the firm’s communication expressed.

Investigation Details

Government officials announced that the freight aircraft’s wing ignited and an engine fell off soon after departure from the Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport, resulting in the jet to fall and explode into a inferno.

The NTSB has said it is probing the jet’s maintenance history, that was in the state for fixes a period ahead of the incident.

Aviation data revealed the jet was on the runway in that location from 3 September to mid-October.

“We are cognizant that this plane was located in San Antonio,” said an investigator on Thursday, not giving a specific date range. “We will examine each aspect of repairs that was completed, from the San Antonio period, right up to the time of the journey.”

Retrieval of Vital Items

The audio device and data recorder were found, and the power plant was found on the airfield.

The recorders – called data containers – were built to survive accident forces and severe fire from fires, and they appeared to be undamaged when located amid the wreckage. Authorities plan on analyzing information from the recorders.

Jet’s last flight details displayed an altitude of 475 feet and a rate of 210 mph before the impact.

Service History

Based on aviation authority files dated 18 September, a fracture on a component in the fuel container required fixes.

The company ST Engineering, which stated it offers airframe maintenance for UPS’s aircraft and operates a maintenance center in Texas, chose not to provide remarks, but said it would work closely when relevant authorities reached out it.

Services Resume

Meanwhile, the hub operations resumed that evening with its express or night sort process, representative Jim Mayer said. The three runways at the aviation hub were also open again.

The sorting center in the city is the organization’s most significant. The hub hires more than twenty thousand people in the region, handles three hundred aircraft daily and sorts more than four hundred thousand packages per hour.

Local Response

A candlelight vigil was organized on the late afternoon of that date by the local worker’s group, which acts for employees at the airfield, the firm’s largest shipping facility.

Teamsters Local 89, which stands for staff, commenced the gathering with a moment of silence at the evening hour, the rough hour of the accident two days earlier.

“This event was so unexpected, so surprising,” the mayor told the crowd of two hundred. “No one had a moment to part to each of those who we have lost.”
